Celebrating 40 Years Of Framing Memories
Picture framing helps to display so much — our photos, artwork, mementos and, most importantly, our memories. For four decades, J & S Picture Frame Warehouse’s owner Sherry Morris and her highly trained team have carefully framed memories for their customers.
The business will be celebrating its 40th anniversary for the entire month of May at the same Sutherland area location that Sherry opened in 1978.
“The quality of custom framing and printing across the industry has improved a lot over the past 40 years,” says Sherry. “Improvements such as acid-free papers, UV inks and large format printers mean that customers can preserve what they are framing for the next generation with confidence. Now all of our framing projects include archival matting and backing.”

What are the current trends in picture framing? Sherry and her team agree that the rustic barn wood look and shabby chic are very popular. And, similar to the jewelry industry, yellow gold has made a comeback.
“Now more than ever, there is a cross-section of tastes in Saskatoon. It really depends on the individual style of the home and the homeowners. I can say barn wood frames are popular, but we also get many orders for minimalist and more classic-style frames.”
Some memories are not as easy and straightforward to frame as a photograph. Sherry estimates that about 10 per cent of their business is shadow boxes (a deep frame used to showcase mementos). What can be framed in a shadow box? The J & S team has lots of suggestions including war medals and decorations, sports memorabilia, precious china, jewelry and, in one unusual case, a real snakeskin!
Original Artwork
Attached to the J & S showroom is the gallery of well-known Saskatchewan artist Glen Scrimshaw. Glen’s paintings of nature and wildlife scenes make excellent gifts and are truly representative of the province’s beauty. J & S also has other framed original artwork for sale, including some pieces on consignment from artists. Plus, the J & S Gallery space can be rented out for art shows.
Other J & S services include printing scanned artwork (or photos) onto canvas, giclée printing for fine art digital prints and large format custom printing.
In the end, Sherry’s advice for business longevity is simple: “It is essential to keep evolving and progressing. If I didn’t adapt and incorporate new ideas into this business, I’m not sure we would be here today.”
