The Authentic Taste Of China — In Our Own Backyard

The Authentic Taste Of China — In Our Own Backyard

If you’ve ever dined in Chinatown in Calgary, Vancouver or Toronto — or had the privilege to eat Chinese cuisine in China — you’ve probably had and fallen in love with dim sum.

Dim sum is a traditional Cantonese cuisine where you enjoy baskets of dumplings and steamed buns along with small plates of steamed vegetables and roasted meats, served with pots of tea. Usually served as brunch or lunch, dim sum is delicious and fun to share with family and friends. This wonderful tradition is now available all day at Regina’s China Liang’s Buffet, located downtown in the Wingate by Wyndham hotel. If you’re a long time dim sum aficionado or totally new to it, run — don’t walk — to China Liang’s.

Owner Helen Liang moved to Regina from Toronto in 2009, opening China Liang’s East location in 2012. Helen opened the downtown location in 2016, and both restaurants offered Chinese buffet dining with takeout and delivery. “After a year in our downtown location, we thought that dim sum would be a great addition to our menu,” says Helen. She hired two chefs — one from Calgary and one from Hong Kong — and developed a traditional dim sum menu sure to delight.

China Liang’s dim sum menu features classic dishes such as steamed shrimp dumplings, BBQ pork buns and sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf — all served made-to-order in steamer baskets. You can’t pass up plates of pan-fried stuffed eggplant or green pepper with shrimp paste, and don’t miss the steamed rice crepes with shrimp or BBQ pork. Every meal should end with dim sum’s classic dessert, sweet egg tarts. There are 48 dishes to choose from, all handmade and ready to share. “Everything is freshly made, and just like what you would find in China,” says Helen.

If you’re up for another traditional Chinese cuisine, China Liang’s also offers all-you-can-eat hot pot every day from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Select from 48 fresh ingredients and tuck them into a delicious broth simmering in the centre of your table. “You can create a custom hot pot to your taste, with everything from pork, beef, chicken, lamb and seafood, plus a great variety of vegetables and noodles.”

You can finish your hot pot dining with a delightful taro coconut milk dessert.  And, as always, you can enjoy the buffet-style dining that China Liang’s started with. There’s more than 60 items to try — fresh and ready when you are.

Whatever you’re up for — dim sum, hot pot, buffet, takeout or delivery — China Liang’s has it. “Our east location on Eastgate Drive is always ready with our buffet plus takeout and delivery,” says Helen. “If you’re hungry for dim sum or hot pot, or our buffet and takeout, head to our downtown location and bring your appetite.” All you have to do now is make your choice and get in the car; no matter what you pick, you’ve leave happy and very, very full.
