Design Services that Make Your House a Home
Since 2007, Jillian’s Design Elements has been helping make the lives of Moose Jaw homeowners easier — and their homes more beautiful.
The award-winning design firm offers interior consulting services and contemporary home decor. Owner and interior decorator, Jillian Bilawchuk, consults with clients alongside her cousin Karrin Saliger, who runs JDE Design and Drafting, a division of the business.
Karrin completed her diploma in Architectural and Interior Technologies at SIAST (now Saskatchewan Polytechnic), and joined forces with the company to provide services in blueprint drafting, project management and design consulting. “We are home grown Moose Javians who have chosen to plant our roots in our home town and establish our business in the local community,” says Jillian.
With the expertise and design ideas of both women, clients embarking on their home build or renovation are able to consider a variety of options. “We have very different design styles,” says Jillian, “so clients get a different perspective and can approach the design from different angles.”
In addition to residential design services, Jillian’s Design Elements offers design for commercial spaces.
No project is too big or small for the business, which offers everything from a one-hour paint consult to a full project management option with JDE. The business is unique in that, with its combined services, clients can choose to have their entire interior design completed — from blueprints to picture frames.
The residential design process begins with a client consultation to discuss elements such as family dynamic, pets, kids’ ages and how they want the space to function and feel. “This stage is critical in the process,” says Jillian, “as it provides us with a basis to make the space not only aesthetically pleasing, but functional.”
Karrin’s drafting expertise includes creating blueprints for permit-ready custom home plans, renovation, addition and kitchen plans. To get started, Karrin suggests that clients first research home plans that interest them, determining aspects they’re drawn to such as exterior architectural detail, second floor laundry or kitchen configuration. “They decide what’s most important to them. Then we’ll sit down, go through all of the details and combine them to create their dream home.”
While renovations don’t always require a blueprint (versus new homes and additions), Karrin says that many people use them as a way to put their thoughts on paper and express what they want to trades and workers. “Some clients know exactly what they want; others are unsure and require ideas, tips and plans,” says Karrin. “Big or small, I ensure that renovation and addition plans meet my clients’ specific needs.” At the end of this stage, clients have a full set of permit-ready drawings to provide to the city and their contractor.
The most common service provided by the company is consulting for interior finishings. Jillian and Karrin are extremely efficient, often able to select flooring, countertops, backsplash and paint in a one or two-hour consultation. (Consulting rates are $85 per hour.)
“This is the stage in which we put the vision together,” says Jillian. “Not only do we select floor to ceiling finishes, we can also specify all the things in between like fixtures, trim and door styles.” The company strives to support local businesses when dealing with trades and suppliers.
Bonus: Jillian’s Design Elements can also choose your exterior finishings, ensuring your curb appeal is as impressive as your interior.
As anyone who has built or renovated knows, managing the project is one of the biggest challenges. For Karrin, it’s a process she thrives on. Her role as project manager involves determining client wants and needs, preparing a detailed budget and product specifications, developing project schedules and detailed job timelines, coordination and deliveries of all job equipment, materials and suppliers, and sub-trade scheduling.
“After all the finishes have been selected, clients are often overwhelmed with the thought of organizing and scheduling trades along with balancing their busy lives,” says Karrin. “I help eliminate the stress and guessing of schedule and budget.”
Furniture & Finishing Touches
To incorporate the finishing elements of a client’s home — such as art, furniture, rugs and accessories — Karrin and Jillian create an overall plan and look for the space. “We specify all the major details required to execute the plan, because it is important to plan everything before anything is purchased,” says Karrin.
Jillian’s Design Elements’ headquarters doubles as a beautiful two-story boutique featuring furniture, home and giftware and accessories. The majority of furnishings offered are Canadian-made; upholstered pieces from brands such as Van Gogh Designs, Stylus and Pinnacle are available, as well as dining room furniture from Dinec and Amisco.
While the boutique showcases select pieces, the designers can also source other items from these brands, customizing for colour, shape and style. “The finishing touches are the last step — what makes a house a home,” says Karrin. “This is where the clients’ personality comes to life.”
Together, Jillian and Karrin have created a service that’s unmatched in Moose Jaw — complete interior design from start to finish. They welcome people interested in learning more about their services to contact them.
“We love working with a variety of different clients,” says Jillian. “A lot of times people can be overwhelmed when starting a renovation or new build and we are here to eliminate that stress. We can provide as little or as much help as you require.”
